General Surgery Residency
A Welcome from Our Program Leadership
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency Program at Methodist Health System! Our 5-year program has been training surgical residents for over 70 years at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center, one of the largest and longest-standing hospitals in Dallas, Texas. We are proud to offer hands-on experience, education, and training in all aspects of General Surgery. We are a well-established, community-based residency program that is dedicated to producing superb, technically sound, and thoughtful surgeons who are equally prepared to begin a surgical practice or enter into the fellowship of their choice. Our strong educational program has allowed us to maintain a 100% pass rate on the written board exam for more than 10 years.
Our faculty is committed to the education of our residents and to their professional success. Residents training at Methodist gain experience working in a tertiary care center with a Level I Trauma program, an active Solid Organ Transplant program, a busy Hepatobiliary program, and a large volume of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgeries. At the Golden Cross Academic Clinic (hyperlink), our faculty and surgical residents care for the local southwest Dallas community of Oak Cliff and surrounding neighborhoods.
We have three categorical positions per year and three first-year preliminary positions. Given the exposure to a wide range of surgical disease, and by working one-on-one with busy general surgeons and fellowship-trained specialist surgeons, our residents become well-trained in all aspects of general surgery. About 1/3 of our graduates go directly into general surgery practice upon completion of the program. Our graduates who elect to pursue fellowship training have successfully matched into their top choice programs in such specialties as Vascular Surgery, MIS/Bariatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care.
