Enlarged Prostate Treatment

Get relief from BPH with UroLift®

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, often called BPH or enlarged prostate, is the most common prostate condition affecting men ages 50 and older. In those with BPH, the prostate may press against or block the urethra, which can cause numerous urinary symptoms.

If you’re experiencing urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate, it’s important to talk with a urologist. At Methodist Dallas Medical Center, experienced urologists offer several treatment options, including the innovative UroLift System.

How Does the UroLift System Work?

UroLift is a one-time, minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny implants to hold the prostate tissue in place and increase the opening of the urethra. The procedure typically takes less than an hour with no overnight stay needed.

  • During the procedure, the UroLift delivery device is placed through the narrowed urethra.
  • Small implants are permanently placed on each side to hold the prostate tissue in place and increase the opening of the urethra.
  • The delivery device is then removed, and the opened urethra helps improve urinary symptoms.
  • Most see an improvement in any side effects and symptoms within two to four weeks after the procedure.

What Are the Benefits of UroLift?

The UroLift procedure provides you with an alternative to medications or major surgery. It is the only FDA-cleared treatment that uses the minimally invasive Prostatic Urethral Lift (PUL) procedure.

Some of the benefits of UroLift include:

  • Improved quality of life compared to medications
  • No instances of new or lasting erectile or ejaculatory dysfunction
  • No cutting, heating or removal of the prostate tissue
  • Shorter recovery than invasive surgery

Is UroLift an Option for Me?

The UroLift procedure may be an option for men 45 years or older who are currently experiencing symptoms due to BPH. Many private insurances and Medicare will cover the procedure for those who qualify.

If you’re interested in UroLift, talk with your urologist about the benefits and risks. Even if UroLift is not recommended, the nationally recognized urology program at Methodist Dallas provides you with a team of specialists who can help tailor a treatment plan for you.
