Nursing Externships, Residencies, and Fellowships at Methodist Health System

Investing in Your Future as a Nurse

At Methodist Health System, we are committed to growing the next generation of exceptional nurses. Whether you are a nursing student preparing for clinical practice, a new RN beginning your career, or an experienced nurse looking to transition into a new practice setting, our programs are designed to support your professional growth, confidence, and long-term success.

Nursing Externships

An immersive learning experience for senior-level nursing students

Our Nursing Externship Program—offered at select campuses—provides senior nursing students the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience while working alongside experienced nurses in a supportive environment. Cohorts begin in December and June.

Externs are paired with dedicated preceptors and are exposed to real patient care situations that enhance clinical judgment, strengthen skills, and build confidence before graduation. Externs may gain experience in a variety of specialty areas, such as:

  • Women’s Services - Labor & Delivery
  • Intensive Care and Intermediate Care
  • Operating Room
  • Emergency Department
  • Medical/Surgical

*Specialty areas vary depending on availability

This program also helps students explore areas of interest and connect with teams they may want to join after graduation.

Nursing Residencies & Fellowships

A supportive transition from student to professional nurse or as an experienced professional nurse into a new practice setting.

Our Nurse Residency and Fellowship Programs are offered three times a year—February, July, and October—to support new graduate nurses and experienced nurses as they transition into a new practice setting. Methodist Health System’s residency and fellowships combine structured education, hands-on clinical training, and professional mentorship to ensure you feel confident and prepared.

Four of our campuses, Methodist Charlton, Dallas, Mansfield, and Richardson, are accredited as Transition to Practice programs by the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP), which sets the standard for residency programs that support the transition of new graduate nurses into practice.

Residencies and fellowships are available in a variety of clinical areas, including:

  • Medical/Surgical
  • Intensive Care and Intermediate Care
  • Emergency Department
  • Operating Room
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Mother/Baby
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

*Residency and fellowship position availability varies based on the hiring needs of the department

As a Nurse Resident or Fellow, you will benefit from:

  • A structured, evidence-based transition-to-practice curriculum
  • Support from clinical educators, preceptors, and nursing leaders
  • Team-based learning, simulation, and specialty training
  • Opportunities for long-term career growth within our system
